Our Location

North Beer Lodge enjoys a rural location in North Beer hamlet about a mile from the small village of Boyton. Launceston, the nearest town and ancient capital of Cornwall complete with its own castle, is around 7 miles away. Despite its isolated position, North Beer Lodge has easy access to the A30 (5 miles) and the beautiful North Cornish and North Devon coast, Bodmin and Dartmoor.

We are very close to the coast (Widemouth Bay is our nearest beach) and Bude with its famous Sea Pool is a small distance further. Also, we’re very close to the South West Coastal Path made even more famous by the recent Salt Path film.

There is a wealth of things to do in Cornwall from wonderful beaches to amazing stately homes.

Whatever you enjoy doing on holiday you’ll find something for everyone here in Cornwall. Then when you’re done – enjoy some of our famous local specialities in some of the finest eateries you’ll find anywhere

That means that our attention to detail has to be first class be that cleanliness, décor, comfort, style, equipment or welcome hamper. About Us

We – Mary and Chris – have both fallen in love with North Cornwall, after years of living in London and Brighton. Mary always wanted to live in the country, with land, animals, fresh air and dark skies. Chris, more of a townie, wasn’t so sure – but now he is a convert.

The sea is around 15 minutes away. Dartmoor is 30 minutes away. Bodmin Moor is on the doorstep, and the more cosmopolitan charms of Padstow and St Ives less than an hour away.

We have fibre broadband, quicker than in many parts of London. We have wood burners in our house and in The Lodge.

We have food producers locally creating some of the best possible ingredients, and a range of local brewers and distillers. Award winning restaurants are nearby.

We wake to the sound of the dawn chorus, buzzards and other raptors circle the skies throughout the day, and we go to sleep to the sound of owls.

Why, we keep asking ourselves, did we leave it so long to move to Cornwall?

North Beer Lodge 😀 – This review is for the lodge as the cottage is now sold . Lovely big well equipped lodge with great views.A great hot tub and wood burner. 😞 – There was 3 gates to open and close everything you went in or out of the property, which made it very secure but a bit of a pain. The underfloor heating was a bit hard to get right so maybe some instructions on how to adjust it would be good .

Our Recommendations

So that you get the most out of your stay, we’ve put together a compilation of recommendations. You’ll find some of the better-known attractions as well as some of the special local places that don’t show up the guidebooks. We’ll send you the digital version as soon as your booking is confirmed.

Beaches

The Strangles beach is one of our favourites – a real secret place. It’s located on a stretch of the North Cornish coast known for its high cliffs. In fact, nearby High Cliff is the highest cliff in Cornwall at over 700 feet (200 metres). This gives some idea of the setting of this long sand and shingle beach. The cliffs aren’t so steep here but the walk down from the coast path is quite demanding but beautiful, quiet, and wild.

Walks

A walk to Bodmin’s Cheesewring is another of ours and our dogs’ favourite places. The name derives from the resemblance of the piled slabs to a “cheesewring”, a press-like device that was once used to make cheese The walk passes by the Hurlers, a group of three stone circles dating from the Bronze Age. The legend goes that a group of men were turned to stone for playing the Cornish game of hurling on a Sunday. On a warm day you can also go swimming in Gold Diggings quarry.

Restaurants

We love the Bay View Inn restaurant at Widemouth, only 20 minutes’ away. It has arguably one of the finest sea views anywhere in the world as well as great food using the finest local ingredients. It’s a great place to go to for local fresh fish or just pop in for beer after a walk on the beach.

Local Events

Don’t miss our very own show here in Launceston coming up on every year in July.It has everything from local produce to ferret racing! A great day out. There are lots of amazing events here in Cornwall throughout the seasons, the Eden Sessions (at the Eden Project), the Port Isaac Shanty Festival, Rock Oyster Festival, Christmas and local produce markets, and even our own Launceston Arts and Literary festival courtesy of the Charles Causley Trust.

Yes, there are several in Launceston. There is a Tesco and also a Marks & Spencer foodhall.  You can book a home delivery before you arrive. Alternatively, if you’d like something more Cornish, why not try the Cornish Food Box company who will deliver directly to The Lodge. The Cornish Foodbox Co.

Giving Back

We’re passionate about Cornwall and wanted to do something to ‘give back’ to this wonderful area.  So we have decided to sponsor three local charities. For each direct booking we donate £10 to each charity.  Click on the logos for more information.

Cornwall Air Ambulance

The Cornwall Air Ambulance was key in rescuing Mary when she badly hurt her ankle on the South West Coastal Path.  Your direct booking helps the crew to continue their work along some of the most challenging coastline in the country.

The Cinnamon Trust

Based in Cornwall, The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity for the elderly and their much loved, much needed companion animals.

Mary has worked in the community and seen the great work that this charity does helping people and their pets stay together.

Bude Sea Pool

Bude Sea Pool is a semi-natural tidal pool and is a safe haven for wild swimming on the edges of the Atlantic Ocean.

Access is unrestricted and FREE of any admission charge. It’s a great asset to the area and funded entirely by donations and staffed by volunteers.
